Cutting on snacks, working out, staying away from sugar and not purchasing processed foods are all great ideas to improve one’s diet, thus one’s health. But there’s something a lot of people seem to forget when trying to improve the quality of the food they eat. Cooking with local fruits and vegetables is crucially important, both for one’s health and ecological footprint.
Local fruits and vegetables in markets across Canada
But making the right call at the supermarket is often hard. That’s why we’ve put together a list of the best options there are for fruits and vegetables at markets and grocery stores of Canada’s largest urban areas. This list will be published monthly, so you’ll always know what your local options are. When an asterisk follows a fruit or a vegetable, be quick on your heels. That means it’s going out of season very soon.
Note that we worked with many sources to compile this list of fruits and vegetables, some of which didn’t specify whether produce was from the field or the greenhouse. Unless provenance is specified, use common sense. In November, tomatoes are rarely from the fields.
This list serves as an indication of what’s most likely to be local in your area. Whether we end up being right or wrong depends on a grocer’s suppliers and their policies regarding local sourcing.
Oh and in case you’re wondering what to do with all those, have a look at the Pinterest board we prepared. You’ll also be able to save the most money on these produce on YP Shopwise: click here to download the iOS app, and here to install the Android app.
